Chennai: The Opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu staged protest demonstrations in various parts of the state to condemn the state government's failure to tackle the acute water crisis, even as
the ruling AIADMK performed special yagnas in temples to propitiate the rain gods and praying for rains.
As announced by the Party high command, the DMK staged protest demonstrations in all the district headquarters blaming the stategovernment for not taking adequate steps to tackle the drinking water scarcity.
DMK district secretaries, who led the demonstration, urged the state government to take immediate steps to tackle the water crisis.Meanwhile, the ruling AIADMK conducted yagnas in several temples praying for rain.
Ministers in their respective districts participated in the yagna held in various temples across the state.
In a related development, senior DMK leader and party Treasurer Duraimurugan had a dig at Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami'sannouncement to transport water by train from Jolarpettai in Velloredistrict to meet the scarcity.
Mr Palaniswami yesterday told reporters that said since all the four reservoirs in Chennai have completely dried up due to lack of rains, it has been decided to bring 10 lakh litres of waters by rail and announced an allocation of Rs 65 crore for this purpose.
However, Mr Duraimurugan on Saturday warned of agitation if thegovernment bring water from Jolarpettai saying it would hamper the drinking water needs of the people of the district.
The state government has to face an agitation if it went aheadwith its proposed plan to transport water by rail from Jolapettai,Mr Duraimurugan told reporters.
In a related development, members of Tamil Nadu Towheed Jamatoffered special prayers in mosques praying for rain.(UNI)
