Earthquake of magnitude 5.9 strikes Assam, jolts major parts of North Bengal

Siliguri: An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck near Dhekiajuli, Assam, on Sunday jolted major parts of West Bengal's northern district, especially in the Dooars, Terai and Darjeeling region, official sources said.

The tremor was also felt in Kolkata, a separate report said as the quake happened exactly at 4:41 PM.

Sources said the tremors felt across north Bengal districts and other parts of Northeastern parts of India. The people in various parts of north Bengal reported strong shaking for several seconds, causing some panic among the people.

Even the women of the households were seen beginning to blow conch shells. However, there had been no report of any damage of property in the tremor.
