FedEx courier scam: Rajasthan man held for conning Chennai man of 15 lakh

Chennai: A person belonging to Rajasthan was arrested for cheating money online by pretending to be Mumbai Police and in the name of FedEx Courier.

Police sources said Ashok Ranjith (39), a resident of Kilpauk in Chennai, received a call on March 17 and the person, who contacted him, said he was speaking from FedEx Courier, Mumbai Branch.
 
He told Ranjith that the parcel they had sent from Mumbai to Taiwan contained illegal properties and Mumbai Police should investigate him and gave the phone to another person, who identified himself as Mumbai police and threatened that they will come to arrest him for sending illegal properties by courier.
 
Later the same person contacted Ashok Ranjith via Skype Call and threatened that the money you have in the bank account is illegal money and if asked him to send the money demanded by them immediately to the bank account.
 
They also threatened that the matter would be referred to RBI for a probe, while assuring that the money would be returned if has not committed any wrongdoing.
 
Believing this, Ashok Ranjith sent a total of Rs.15,26,000 in two installments to the said bank account.
 
Later, when Ashok Ranjith went to the bank and investigated, some mysterious persons had cheated money through online from his account.
 
In this regard Ashok Ranjith lodged a complaint at East Zone Cyber Crime Police Station of Greater Chennai Police.
 
A case was registered and investigation was carried out. The police team conducted a thorough investigation with the cell phone number, bank account, IP Address and Network user ID used by the accused, and it was revealed that the accused was involved in the above scam from Rajasthan.
 
Accordingly, on the orders of the Joint Commissioner of Police, the Cyber Crime police went to Rajasthan, make further investigations and arrested Vishal Kumar, (23) from his Jaipur residence on June 11.
 
One Cell phone and a Bank pass book were seized from him.
 
The arrested Vishal kumar was produced in Jaipur court, Rajasthan and brought to Chennai with due legal proceedings as per the court order.
 
On Saturday, he was produced before the Saidapet Magistrate Court and remanded in judicial custody.
