Final draft of NRC reports over 4 Lakh illegal immigrants in Assam

Guwahati:The final draft of National Register of Citizens for Assam was released today, where names of 40.07 applicants have been left out. Out of total 3,29,91,384 applicants, names of 2,89,84,677 have been included in the final draft. Names of 40,07,707 applicants have been left out of the final draft. 
Addressing a press conference after releasing the final draft, Registrar General of India Sailesh said, "This is a historic moment for us on completion of a milestone in the form of publication of the final draft of NRC." 
 
He emphasized that this was the final draft only and the complete NRC will be published after settlement of all claims and objections. Persons who do not find their names can apply between August 30 to September 28 next, Sailesh said. "Any person who is not satisfied with the outcome of the claims and objections can file appeal before the Foreigners Tribunal," he added. 
 
The RGI refused to give a timeframe for publication of the complete NRC as assessment would be possible only after filing of the claims and objections phase. Joint secretary (NE), MHA, Satyebdra Garg and chief coordinator of NRC, Assam, were also present at the press conference. 
 
The process of updating the NRC for Assam, with midnight of March 24, 1971, as cut off, had started in 2013, under the supervision of the Supreme Court. The first draft with names of 1.90 crore applicants was released at midnight of December 31, 2017. (UNI)
