Pune: An FIR has been registered against newly Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani and JNU student Umar Khalid for their provocative speeches on December 31, resulting in violence in Bhima-Koregaon in Pune. The Viushrambaug police station has registered a case against the two under section 153 (A), 505 and 117 and others.
Mr Mevani along with Umar Khalid, a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi had delivered the provocative speeches during the function which was held on December 31, at historical ground Shaniwarwada in Pune.The two Dalit leaders had attended the 'Elgar Parishad' which was organised to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle of Bhima-Koregaon, on December 31.
The police had received several complaints against them.The 'Maharashtra Bandh' was called by Dalit organisations on Wednesday in protest against the clashes at the bicentenary celebrations. The Bandh had paralysed large parts of Maharashtra, with a minor boy killed in Nanded and several others injured in Pune, Mumbai in sporadic incidents of violence.
A case has been registered against both of them and further investigation was on, PI Amrit Marathe of Vishrambaug police station said.(UNI)
