Varanasi: Following his resignation from the Sanskrit Vidya Dharam Vigyan (SVDV) in the wake of protests from students since early November at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Dr Firoze Khan has now joined the Sanskrit Department in the Faculty of Arts.

The University's Public Relations Officer Dr Rajesh Singh on Tuesday told UNI that Dr Khan has joined as an Assistant Professor in the Sanskrit Department of the Arts Faculty.

He however, refused to comment on any question related to Dr Khan's resignation from the SVDV. Alongside, he said that this could be his personal decision. As per rules, the University will take further act on the matter.

The University sources said that Dr Khan had applied separately in the Faculty of Ayurveda, Faculty of Arts and the SVDV and he had been selected in all three.

After getting an appointment letter from the Sanskrit Department in Faculty of Arts, he has joined the same and furnished his resignation from the SVDV. However, paperwork regarding his resignation is yet to be completed in the University.

On the other hand, the protesting students celebrated after Dr Firoze Khan's resignation from the SVDV while many among them said that the resignation was a victory for the students.
The students said that they will now end their protests. One of the students, Santosh Jha said that their opposition was not on Dr Khan's knowledge of Sanskrit subject, it was rather related to 'karma-kaand.'

Now their main demand has been met. Following the University's announcement related to the acceptance of resignation from the SVDV, they will announce an end to their protests, he said.

Notably, Dr Firoze Khan had been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the SVDV, around a month back. Opposing to the same, the students had been staging a 'dharna' since then.

Numerous protesters alleged that Dr Khan had been appointed wrongfully against the feelings and sentiments of University founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya and 'sanatan dharm.'

The students averred that they were not raising questions against Dr Khan's knowledge, rather their major protest was related to 'karma-kaand.' (UNI)
