Chennai: Rich tributes were paid to DMK Patriarch and late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on his 102nd birth anniversary, being celebrated as the Classical Language day, on Tuesday.
Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin led the state in paying floral tributes to his father and his mentor on the occasion.
Mr Stalin, accompanied by his Cabinet colleagues and senior leaders, including MPs, MLAs, district secretaries and Party functionaries and DMK cadres, paid floral tributes at the memorials of Mr Karunanidhi, a five time Chief Minister , who had never lost an election having contested for 13 times, and DMK Founder and stalwart C N Annadurai on the Marina Beach front to mark the occasion.
Later, Mr Stalin garlanded the statue of Mr Karunanidhi at the Omandurar Government Estate Multi-speciality hospital complex and paid floral tributes to a decorated portrait of the late leader.
Mr Stalin also paid floral tributes to the portrait of Mr Karunanidhi at the latter's Gopalapuram residence, garlanded his statue at the DMK headquarters 'Anna Arivalayam' and also at the premises of Party Organ, Tamil daily Murasoli.
As per the resolution adopted at the June 1 DMK General Council meeting in Madurai, the day was being celebrated as Classical language day, to honour the late leader for getting Classical language status to Tamil.
The DMK also announced that the party would be holding 102 welfare schemes across the state to mark the occasion in which senior leaders, Ministers, MPs, MLAs and party functionaries would be presiding.
