Srinagar: Four unidentified militants were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Saturday, official sources said.This was the second encounter during the past 24 hours in south Kashmir, where three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants were killed on Friday.
Sources said on a tip-off about the presence of militants, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint CASO at village Ashmipora in Shopian. However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons, they said, adding security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter.
They said four unidentified militants were killed. Firing has stopped, they said adding operation was going on in the nearby orchards.
Meanwhile, security forces burst few teargas shells and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse people who were protesting near the encounter site. Additional security forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, they said.(UNI)
