Hijab row: Sikh girl asked to remove turban in Bengaluru college, Congress condemns incident

New Delhi: Congress leader Sunil Jakhar said reports of an Amritdhari Sikh girl being asked to remove her turban in a Bengaluru college is "very disconcerting".

Taking to Twitter, Jhakar, senior party leader from Punjab, said the incident showed the apprehensions of Sikhs amid the ongoing Hijab controversy were not wrong.

"Unfortunately it appears that earlier apprehensions of Punjab were not unfounded. Reports of an Amritdhari Sikh girl being asked to remove her turban in a Bengaluru college are very disconcerting," Jakhar said.

Jakhar had earlier tweeted on February 13 saying he hoped Jathedar Sahib Giani Harpreet Singh will raise apprehensions of Punjabis about Karnataka CM's statement about not allowing 'religious clothing' in educational institutions when he meets Home Minister Amit Shah.

Shah paid obeisance at the Golden Temple on February 13 and had held a closed-door meeting with the officiating Jathedar of Akal Takht Harpreet Singh.

Amid the ongoing row over wearing Hijab in education institutions in Karnataka, a Sikh girl was asked to remove her turban in the reputed Mount Carmel PU College in Bangalore in accordance with the February 10 High Court's interim order. (UNI)
