Srinagar: Security forces shot dead three Pakistani militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba, in an encounter in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Thursday.

Police said the trio had infiltrated and were intercepted in Jamagund village close to the Line of Control by the Army and police. The operation, they said, was launched based on specific input developed by Kupwara Police regarding infiltration attempt by militants.

"An encounter erupted in the village in which three terrorists were killed," a police officer said.

Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said all three slain were Pakistanis and were affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba.

“From the incriminating materials recovered, the three killed terrorists have been identified as Pakistani, affiliated with terror outfit LeT,” he said.

He said 26 foreigners have been killed in various gunfights this year in Kashmir.

“So far, 26 foreign terrorists (14 JeM & 12 LeT) have been neutralised this year,” he said.

This is the second infiltration bid that has been foiled in Kupwara in the last one week. On May 20, a militant from Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir was killed and another got wounded as the Army foiled an infiltration bid in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara. (UNI)
