Srinagar: Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the targeting a police party in Srinagar on Tuesday evening that left a police officer dead and two others injured.

The Amaq News Agency of the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack here on Wednesday. However, the claim could not be independently verified.

On Tuesday militants fired upon a police checkpoint at Lal Bazar area of Srinagar city at around 7 pm killing Assistant Sub Inspector of Police Mushatq Ahmad and injuring two other police officers.

A video clip of the attack was also released by Amaq. The attacker can be heard shouting 'Allahu Akbar' and "La Ilaha IlAllah" while firing indiscriminately at the cops. The group claimed a weapon was also taken after the attack.

Soon after the attack, a senior police officer said they were scanning CCTV footage to identify the attackers.

Last year IS claimed responsibility for at least two attacks in Srinagar.

In October 2021, IS claimed responsibility for killing a street vendor identified as Virender Paswan of Bihar in old Srinagar.

Two months later the group claimed responsibility for the attack on a traffic policeman in the old city. (UNI)
