Hazaribagh (Jharkhand): A fire stunt went dangerously out of control during a Muharram procession in Hazaribagh district, leaving at least 15 people injured, including several women and children.

The incident occurred in Pauta village under Muffasil police station limits when participants were performing traditional fire stunts as part of the religious procession.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire intensified suddenly after diesel was poured onto it, causing flames to flare uncontrollably and engulf nearby individuals.

Panic and chaos followed, but local residents responded promptly and transported the injured to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital in Hazaribagh. Hospital sources confirmed that six of the critically injured were later referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, for specialised treatment.

According to officials, the district administration had earlier issued clear instructions prohibiting the use of fire during processions.

Despite the directive, the fire-based performance was carried out, leading to the accident.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident and potential lapses in enforcement.

Local MLA Pradeep Prasad’s representative, Sahil Kumar, visited the hospital and interacted with the affected families.

He stated that the condition of some victims is serious and described the hospital scenes as extremely distressing. He promised all necessary support.

The district administration has directed the hospital management to ensure proper treatment of the injured.
