Kargil Vijay Diwas: President Murmu, PM Modi lead nation in paying homage

New Delhi: As the nation marked Kargil Vijay Diwas on Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to all the brave warriors who laid down their lives trying to safeguard the nation.

"Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of extraordinary valour, courage and determination of our armed forces. I bow to all the brave soldiers who laid down their lives to protect Mother India. All the countrymen will always be indebted to them and their family members. Jai Hind," Murmu tweeted.

"Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of the pride and glory of Mother India. On this occasion, I salute all the brave sons of the country who excelled in the defence of the motherland. Jai Hind," the Prime Minister tweeted in Hindi.

Modi also attached a four-minute video with the tweet that touched upon various aspects of the Kargil War through his and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's speeches.

The three Service chiefs - Indian Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande, Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar also visited the National War Memorial to pay tributes to the fallen soldiers by laying wreaths.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also laid wreath at National War Memorial. Singh along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other Union Ministers recalled the valour and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers on the occasion.

Taking to Twitter, Rajnath Singh said, "On Kargil Vijay Diwas, India salutes the bravery, courage and sacrifice of our armed forces. They fought valiantly in extremely harsh conditions to defend our motherland. Their act of valour and indomitable spirit will remain etched forever as a defining moment in India’s history."

"Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of indomitable courage and valour of the Indian Armed Forces. Today is a day of pride as well as a day to remember and honour the bravery of our jawans. I bow to the soldiers who drove away the enemies from Kargil and again hoisted the tricolour," Shah tweeted.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on July 26 every year to mark the historic day when India defeated Pakistan in the Kargil War of 1999. (UNI)
