New Delhi: A Delhi Court on Friday awarded life imprisonment to expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection with 2017 Unnao rape case.The court further also imposed a fine of Rs 25 lakh and directed that the rape survivor be paid Rs 10 lakh as compensation.
A Special Court on December 16 held Sengar guilty. The minor was kidnapped and rape by Sengar between June 11-20, 2017.Sengar also continuously threatened the victim and warned her against approaching the police.
After the case won media attention, an FIR was registered against Sengar under sections 363, 366, 376 and 506 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with 3&4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in April 2018.
After the registration of the case, Allahabad High Court ordered the arrest of Sengar and handed over the probe to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Meanwhile, the survivor along with her two relatives and lawyer were crushed by a speeding truck in Rae Bareilly killing her aunt and her daughter.
The Supreme Court passed a transfer order for trial in all the cases, including the accident, to Delhi from Lucknow and ordered that the same be held on a day to day basis and be completed within 45 days.
After the transfer of case, charges under Sections 120 B, 363, 366, 376 of Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of the POCSO Act were framed.
CBI Special Judge Dharmesh Sharma on December 16, after hearing the arguments on behalf of Prosecution and Defence Counsel, passed a conviction order under section 120b, 363, 366, 376 of Indian Penal Code and other provisions of POSCO against Sengar and adjourned the matter for hearing arguments on quantum of sentence for December 19.
