Imphal: Soibam Sarat, a 55-year-old man, was abducted and beheaded in Manipur's Jiribam district on Thursday, official sources said.

Prohibitory orders were issued by the government to ensure the situation did not spiral into a major ethnic conflict.

The situation was tense as it was suspected that the perpetrators were from another ethnic group.

A huge mob rushed to the Jiribam police station to defend people from the attackers who were armed with sophisticated arms. They demanded the return of their licenced guns to defend themselves.

Jiribam district has been largely peaceful so far and the Meitei and Kuki clash since May 3, 2023 didn't affect the district.

The district was largely inhabited by Meitei but later Muslims became the majority community. Kuki and Naga also have a considerable population.

The district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Manipur's Jiribam district citing a likelihood of imminent danger to human lives and properties due to the 'unlawful activities of some anti-social elements', an official order said.

As per the order issued by the District Magistrate, due to the present prevailing situation, all the DLOs of Jiribam district are directed to keep vigil and safeguard respective government offices/properties to avoid any losses of important government properties and documents.

Further, it is also informed that section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973 has been enforced vide this office order dated June 6, 2024.
