A major explosion occurred near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening, triggering panic and widespread damage. The blast took place in a car near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, reportedly killing at least eight people and injuring 24 others. The fire spread rapidly, engulfing nearby vehicles in the parking area.
The explosion was so powerful that it shattered windows of vehicles parked several metres away and was heard in nearby buildings of the congested area.
According to initial reports, the explosion occurred in an i20 car. Fire department teams rushed to the spot and managed to control the blaze after intense efforts. Several injured victims have been admitted to LNJP Hospital for treatment.
Forensic experts and Delhi Police’s Special Cell are currently investigating the site to determine the cause of the blast. Officials from the Delhi Fire Department confirmed that nine vehicles caught fire due to the explosion, resulting in significant damage.
Authorities are probing whether the incident was accidental or a deliberate act. Security has been tightened across major cities as the investigation continues.
Following the explosion, security agencies have issued a nationwide high alert, including in Mumbai.
