, Wednesday, 11 March 2020 (11:48 IST)
New Delhi:In a day which witnessed rapid political developments, former Member of Parliament(MP) Jyodiraditya Scindia, on Tuesday resigned from primary membership of the Congress, even as the party president Sonia Gandhi expelled Mr Scindia from party for anti-party activities.
In a letter addressed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Mr Scindia said that he is unable to serve people of his state, Madhya Pradesh, and country while being a part of Congress."Having been a primary member of the Congress party for the last 18 years, it is now time for me to move on. I am tendering my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian national congress and as you well know, this is a path that has been drawing itself out over the last year", Mr Scindia wrote.

''While my aim and purpose remain the same as it has always been from the very beginning to serve the people of my state and country, I believe I am unable to do this anymore within this party. To reflect and realise the aspiration of my people and my workers I believe it is best that I now look ahead at a fresh start", the former Guna MP said and thanked Ms Gandhi and other party colleagues for providing him with a platform to have served the nation.

Scindia's resignation from the Congress came after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.In a quick reaction, the Congress expelled Mr Scindia for anti-party activities."Congress President has approved the expulsion of Jyotiraditya Scindia from the Indian National Congress with immediate effect for anti-party activities", a statement issued byparty organisational general secretary KC Venugopal said.

Mr Scindia's exit from the Congress has left the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh on the brink a collapse. On Monday, 17 Congress MLAs, loyal to Mr Scindia, had flown to Bengaluru, the move had put Kamal Nath government in a crisis and the grand old party sought all the options to save the Congress government in the state.

According to party sources, the top leadership of the Congress had conveyed that it is ready to accept the Mr Scindia's demands like PCC chief in Madhya Pradesh and Rajya Sabha seat.
Mr Scindia, however, did not respond to Congress high command and had decided to resign from the party.

Reacting to Scindia 's exit, Leaders of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary said, "It will indeed be a loss to our party and I don't think our government in Madhya Pradesh will survive.''

Sources say that Scindia is likely to join the BJP.It is learned that the BJP has promised to give Mr Scindia a Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh and may induct him in the Union Cabinet.

Mr Scindia, who lost Guna in 2019 election, has been dissatisfied because he was not considered for the post of Chief Minister after the 2019 assembly election, in which Congress got a narrow majority and appointed senior leader Kamal Nath as Chief Minister, the party sources said. The grand old party had also appointed Mr Nath as state PCC chief which irked the former Union Minister.(UNI)
