Mumbai: A man from eastern suburbs of Mumbai was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting his wife’s 10-year-old niece when she was alone on the day of voting for Lok Sabha elections in May, officials said here on Monday.

The accused was presented in a Special Court for Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act which sent him to police remand for a week, police said.

On Saturday, the girl's mother, who lives in Thane, told her that they would be going to her aunt's place again for a birthday but she got scared and revealed her ordeal to her mother.

The victim’s mother gave a police complaint after which the accused was arrested under penal provisions for rape, threatening and sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
