Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi pushed for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) held a three-hour long emergency meeting on the issue last night.

The board decided to prepare a draft with important parts of Shariah and hand it over to the Law Commission.

While addressing BJP workers in Bhopal on Tuesday, PM Modi said, “How will the country run with different laws? People are only being instigated in the name of the Uniform Civil Code. Two types of laws cannot run the country. The Constitution of India also talks about equal rights for the citizens.”

He further said: "Pasmanda Muslims have become a victim of politics. Some people are using the politics of appeasement to break the country. The BJP cadre should go and explain this to the Muslims and educate them so that they do not fall victim to such politics."

The Law Commission has launched a fresh consultation process on a UCC, seeking views from various stakeholders amid reports that the government plans to bring a draft bill soon.
