Srinagar:Former chief minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday alleged that National Conference (NC) leaders were being put under preventive arrest to facilitate horse trading and defections in Shopian, where a woman NC candidate joined Apni Party (AP).
He alleged that police and administration are facilitating horse trading and defections as these parties could not win seats so now they are using money, muscle threats and government coercion to make up the numbers.
Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, the vice president of NC said, “This explains why our leaders in Shopian district are being put under “preventive arrest” by the police. J&K police & the administration are facilitating horse trading & defections. The woman shown here joining the BJP’s B-team contested & won elections on a NC mandate”.
He further tweeted, “ Shame on this administration for playing partisan politics to curry favour with the ruling party & their stooges. These parties couldn’t win seats so now they are using money/muscle/ threats & government coercion to make up the numbers. So much for “democracy has won”!”.
Mr Abduallah also posted the photograph of the woman, who won on NC symbol, and AP president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhri when she joined AP.
Yasmeen Jan has won from Imamshib-1 (Shopian) on NC ticket securing 193 votes defeating her nearest rival Gull Iqbal (independent) who polled 65 votes.(UNI)
