Kozhikode: A third-year B-Tech Engineering student tragically died by jumping from the seventh floor of a boys' hostel at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Calicut.

Prior to taking the extreme step, the student, identified as Yogheswar Nath of Mumbai, sent heart-wrenching text messages to his parents, signalling his intentions.

The incident unfolded around 0630 hrs, when Yogheswar Nath made the fateful decision to leap from the B-block boys' hostel. His parents, residing in Mumbai, received his distressing messages, prompting them to urgently notify hostel wardens. With their swift action, hostel authorities and security personnel rushed to the scene, only to find the young student lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

Efforts to save Yogheswar Nath's life were in vain, as he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (MCH). Kunnamanglam police have initiated an investigation, registering a case for unnatural death. Meanwhile, the body has been kept at MCH for a post-mortem examination.

Reports circulating suggest that the tragic suicide may be linked to a lack of adequate counselling support and the mounting academic pressures faced by students at NIT Calicut. This alarming revelation underscores the urgent need for enhanced mental health resources and academic assistance within educational institutions.
