Bengaluru: The Karnataka Government has decided not to celebrate the birth anniversary of the controversial 18-th-century ruler of the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom, who had defeated the British Army during Mysore-war, citing law and order problem in the State.
In a press release issued here on Tuesday, it was stated that the State government has received a petition from former Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah, a BJP MLA representing Virajpet in Kodagu district, demanding withdrawal of the previous Government's order on the celebrations of the Tippu Jayanti.

Bopaiah in his petition stated that there is an opposition from large sections in the State against celebrating the Tippu Jayanti, especially in Kodagu district.

He had also brought to the notice of the State government over loss of life, damage to the public as well as to the Private properties during the protest against the celebrations of the Tippu Jayanti, sponsored by the state government.

The BJP during its campaign for 2018 Assembly elections had also pledged to cancel the celebrations of the birth anniversary of Tippu Sultan if it comes to power.(UNI)
