'Chipko' Andolan pioneer fame environmentalist dies of Covid-19 at the age of 94

New Delhi/Dehradun:Environmentalist and ‘Chipko’ movement pioneer Sunderlal Bahuguna passed away on Friday due to Covid-19. He was 94.
Bahuguna was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS), Dehradun after testing positive for Coronavirus.
 
He had been in serious condition since last night after his oxygen level dropped critically and breathed his last at 1205 hrs, according to the hospital sources.Bahuguna, an eco-activist, made the Chipko movement in the 1970s a movement of the masses.
 
Later, he led the Anti-Tehri Dam movement starting in the 1980s to early in 2004.He spent his life persuading and educating the villagers to protest against the destruction of the forests and Himalayan mountains.He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2009.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed deep grief over the passing away of noted environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna.
 
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, "Passing away of Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna Ji is a monumental loss for our nation. He manifested our centuries old ethos of living in harmony with nature. His simplicity and spirit of compassion will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family and many admirers. Om Shanti."
