Orange alert in Delhi, mercury to touch 47C

New Delhi: The MeT on Tuesday issued an orange alert in Delhi and adjoining areas as the maximum temperature is expected to vary between 44 to 47 degrees.

"Delhi and national capital region are set to witness a severe heat wave in the coming days, for which an orange alert has been issued," said the India Meteorological Department. Strong surface winds of around 25 to 35 kmph are also likely during the day.

The IMD said the maximum temperature on Tuesday is likely to settle above 44 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.6 degrees Celsius, while the relative humidity at 8.30 am was recorded at 28 per cent.

On Monday heatwave conditions were recorded in some parts of Delhi-NCR. The maximum temperature was recorded at 45.6 degrees which is 5.2 degrees above normal.

The heat wave will also be felt in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

On Monday, the IMD in its bulletin said that heatwave conditions are likely over northwest and central India during the next three to four days.

"Severe heatwave in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, UP and parts of MP, Rajasthan. Temperature varies between 44-47 degree Celsius," said RK Jenamani, IMD senior scientist. (UNI)
