New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended greetings to all engineers across the country on Engineers’ Day, which is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of Sir M Visvesvaraya, the engineering pioneer of the country.

“Engineers are synonymous with diligence and determination. Human progress would be incomplete without their innovative zeal. Greetings on #EngineersDay and best wishes to all hardworking engineers. Tributes to the exemplary engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary,” the Prime Minister said in a tweet.

Fondly known as Sir MV and the Builder of India, Visvesvaraya was born on this day in 1860 in a small village of Muddenahalli, near present-day Bengaluru.

“Engineers are creators. Engineers make our lives better with their creations. Let’s celebrate the zeal of hardworking engineers on this #EngineersDay. Tribute to one of the greatest engineers of our Nation Sir M Vishweshwaraiah on his birth anniversary,” former prime minister HD Deve Gowda said in a tweet.

Visvesvaraya was awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his exceptional contribution to the building of India in 1955.

Besides, he was also awarded the British knighthood by King George V, which prefixed ‘sir’ to his name.

“We acknowledge the contribution of every sharp mind who transformed our lives with their futuristic ideas and innovations. #ConnectingAspirations #HappyEngineersDay,” leading auto maker Tata Motors said.

In 1917 in Bengaluru, Visvesvaraya established Government Engineering College, which was later renamed as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.

He passed away on April 14 in 1962, five months short of his 102nd birthday. (UNI)
