PM Modi pays tributes to former Japanese Premier Shinzo Abe at state funeral in Tokyo - WATCH

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid his respects to former Prime Minister of Japan Late Shinzo Abe at the State Funeral Ceremony in Tokyo.

Earlier, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Japanese PM Fumio Kishida after reaching Tokyo.

“Both leaders had a productive exchange of views on further deepening bilateral relations. They also discussed a number of regional and global issues,” MEA said.

“The leaders renewed their commitment towards further strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, and in working together in the region and in various international groupings and institutions,” MEA added.

"I am traveling to Tokyo tonight to participate in the State Funeral of former PM Shinzo Abe, a dear friend and a great champion of India-Japan friendship," the Prime Minister said in a tweet on Monday.

"I will be conveying heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister Kishida and Mrs Abe on behalf of all Indians. We will continue working to further strengthen India-Japan relations as envisioned by Abe San," the Prime Minister added in thread.

The Prime Minister will attend the State Funeral ceremony at Budokan, followed by a greeting occasion at Akasaka Palace.

Representatives from over 100 countries, including more than 20 Heads of State or Heads of Government are expected to participate in the State Funeral.

India had announced one-day national mourning on July 9 as a mark of respect for Abe Shinzo.

The visit will be an opportunity for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honor the memory of former PM Abe, who he considered a dear friend and a great champion of India-Japan ties. (Inputs from agencies)
