New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address on Thursday the World Economic Forum’s virtual meeting which began in Davos, Switzerland, this afternoon.

Other Indian leaders who are to speak at the session include, Trade Minister Piyush Goyal, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Railways, Oil and Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, and Textiles Minister Smriti Irani.

The January 25-29 event is being held ahead of an in-person meeting in Singapore in May.

Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, said the focus of the meeting this year would be on “rebuilding trust”.

Chinese President Jinping is scheduled to speak on Monday.

Monday’s sessions will cover “Designing cohesive, sustainable and resilient economic systems inclusive solutions” for making the economy more equitable, sustainable and inclusive.

“As 2021 gathers pace, we find ourselves in the grip of two crises of global and unprecedented proportions. Climate change and the fallout from COVID-19 are very different crises, but with striking similarities and overlaps. Both are wreaking terrible consequences on communities around the world. Yet, both offer opportunities for new ways of organizing human affairs for the better,” said the Forum.

WEF Managing Director Saadia Zahid said, “Facing the ongoing public health crisis of COVID-19 and the pandemic’s lasting effects on the global economy, policy-makers around the world must take this moment to reflect not just on the immediate recovery, but on how this time can be used to transform their economic systems.” (UNI)
