Pune: In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old woman was raped inside a government-run bus at Swargate Bus Depot here while she was going to her village on Wednesday, police said.
The incident took place in the morning when the victim woman came to the bus depot and asked for a bus to Phaltan.
The alleged accused asked the woman to board the bus which was standing at the depot. Then he also got on to the bus and raped the woman.
The police have identified the alleged accused as Dattatray Ramdas Gade, who was absconding. A search was on to nab him, an officer said.
Eight police teams have been formed to trace the accused.
The victim herself approached the police station and filed the complaint. Based on CCTV footage, police then identified the accused.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Vasant More alleged that rapes are happening daily in the Swargate bus depot.
NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule in a post on X said the incident happened in a busy bus stand like Swargate with a police post nearby.
"Still, the fact that the accused dared to commit such a heinous crime shows that criminals have no fear of the law. The question has also been raised on this occasion whether there is no safe place for women in this state. Serious crimes are happening in Pune every day somewhere," she alleged.
She alleged that the state Home Department has failed to stop such cases not been successful in stopping it, said Sule.
