New Delhi: The much awaited elevation of Mr Rahul Gandhi as Congress president is likely to happen before October 30, sources said on Monday. The sources said Congress' Central Election Authority chairman Mullapali Ramachandran has given to party president Sonia Gandhi a tentative schedule for the election of party president before October 30.
The process of election to Congress units in various states is complete and the stage is finally set for the likely elevation of Mr Rahul Gandhi as party president, replacing his mother Sonia Gandhi. In recent weeks, Congress units in various states have passed resolutions seeking elevation of Mr Rahul Gandhi as Congress president.
In fact, Ms Sonia Gandhi had on Friday indicated that the elevation of Mr Rahul Gandhi as the party president could be done “soon". “Soon it will be done,” she said when asked by reporters at a function here as to when Mr Rahul Gandhi, who is at present the vice president of the party, will be elevated. The final schedule of election to the post of the Congress President will be finalised by Congress Working Committee, which is scheduled to meet in the coming days.
In recent years, there has been a rising chorus for the elevation of Mr Rahul Gandhi as party president. Party sources say that Mr Rahul Gandhi's elevation is likely to enthuse party workers ahead of the assembly elections to Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, scheduled to be held by year end. (UNI)
