New Delhi: Even as the trends of counting for the assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh showing the BJP moving towards a comfortable win, new Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday met his mother and former party president Sonia Gandhi.Party sources said that Rahul, who assumed the top post of Congress president on Saturday, met Mrs Gandhi at her 10, Janpath residence to discuss the latest trends of the elecitons, which showed the BJP moving towards a comfortable win in both the states.

Though the Congress is trailing behind the BJP in both the states, party leaders have credited Rahul for putting up a good show in Gujarat.Crediting the Congress with having put up a good performance in the assembly elections in Gujarat, senior Conrgess leader and former Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit said that the personality of party president Rahul Gandhi has been appreciated by the people."I congratulate Rahul Gandhi for getting people and the party together. He united everyone to put up a strong fight. There was an effect that he created - especially in rural areas. His personality was appreciated, not made fun of,' Ms Dikshit said.

Rahul campaigned extensively for the state assembly elections, holding nearly 30 rallies across Gujarat. Reacting to trends of the BJP taking a clear lead in Gujarat, Congress leader and AICC incharge for the state Ashok Gehlot said that his party was a winner even if it did not succeed in forming a government in the state.

"The BJP fought elections on emotional issues. Prime Minister Narendra Modi told voters that he was the son of Gujarat. His prestige was at stake. But the Congress did a real election campaign and talked about the issues related to farmers, Dalits, tribals and traders. We formalised our manifesto for the people of Gujarat after talking to them," he told reporters here. (UNI)
