Rich tributes paid to Kalam on his 5th Remembrance day

Rameswaram: Floral tributes were paid to former President and Missile man A P J Abdul Kalam on the occasion of his fifth Remembrance Day.

Ramanthapuram District Collector Veeraraghava Rao and other officials paid tributes to the late scientist at his memorial at Pei Karumbu, which was decorated with flowers and illuminated.

Every year students of various schools and colleges used to throng the memorial to pay their respects, but due to coronavirus induced lockdown was in force,they were not allowed this year.

In Chennai, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit garlanded a statue of Dr Kalam at Raj Bhavan and also paid floral tributes to his portrait.He also delivered a digital address highlighting the achievements of Dr Kalam.

Elsewhere in the State, people from various walksof life and in every nook and corner of the State,people, young and the old, paid floral tributes to a portrait of Dr Kalam and lit candles.

IIM-Shillong held e-gathering to mark Kalam's death anniversary

The Indian Institute of Management-Shillong on Monday organised an e-gathering to mark the fifth death anniversary of former President, APJ Abdul Kalam who passed away at the Institute's premises while addressing the students in 2015.

Kalam was closely associated with the Institute as a Guest Faculty.

Senior faculty members of the Institute, Prof. Keya Sengupta, Prof. Sanjoy Mukherjee and Prof. Basav Roychoudhury recalled his down to earth presence, wit and wisdom during engagements with him, particularly, between 2013 to 2015.

Students also fondly remembered him as a teacher with a difference who was genuinely concerned about India's wellbeing as a country. During one of his visits Dr. Kalam had exhorted the students of IIM Shillong saying, "I want to see all of you as creative leaders to bring about the required change." He was then on his second visit to teach a course on "Dimensions of National Development."      

During his session with the students Dr. Kalam regularly talked about the challenges faced by the country and the world at large, always emphasizing on the role of leadership to tackle these issues and develop possible solutions.

"He was particularly fond of his concept of PURA (Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas) which focuses on rural development by providing opportunities through cooperative working of resource and social entrepreneur. This would enable our country to grow by shared efforts and overcome the challenges faced by the society," an IIM statement said.

Alumni of IIM Shillong who were fortunate to have been taught by him remembered how Dr. Kalam charted out the link between creative leadership & economic development, and his accentuation on the role of integrity among leaders for sustained success and development of the society.

'Creating a Liveable Planet Earth' was the last lecture delivered by India's Missile Man, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam at IIM Shillong in 2015. The Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Lecture Series was started in 2016 to honour his memory, and the past editions have been graced by Dr.Manas K Mandal, Director General  Life Sciences, DRDO, Padma Vibhushan G. Madhavan Nair, former Chairman ISRO, Padma BhushanProf.Bikash Sinha, former director of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, and Padma BhushanDr. K. Radhakrishnan, former Chairman ISRO.

Inspired by the teachings and values of Dr.Kalam, students of IIM Shillong started Nurturing Minds in 2015. The objective of the program is to encourage learning and help nurture creativity, amongst socially and economically underprivileged school children of Shillong.

Kejriwal, Sisodia pay tributes to former Prez Dr Kalam on his death anniv

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy CM Manish Sisodia on Monday paid tributes to 11th President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his fifth death anniversary.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter,the CM said,"Salute to former President of India Abdul Kalam on his death anniversary. Every citizen will always be indebted to him for his unprecedented contribution."

Mr Sisodia said,"On his 5th death anniversary, my tributes to the Former President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. A great teacher & role model for all of us. His teachings & vision will continue to inspire us."

While delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, Dr Kalam collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest on July 27, 2015, aged 83.

Kalam was elected as the 11th President of India in 2002 with the support of both the ruling BJP and the then-opposition INC. Widely referred to as the "People's President", he returned to his civilian life of education, writing and public service after a single term. 

He was a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda  on Monday paid tributes to 11th President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his fifth death anniversary and said the Missile Man of India was a people's President whose ideal life will keep on inspiring the people of the country.

''My heartfelt tribute to Former President of India Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam ji on his death anniversary. He was a people's President whose ideal life will keep on inspiring the people of the country,'' Mr Nadda said in his tweet.Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also paid tributes in his missive. 

''Tributes to Former President & Missile Man of India, Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, on his death anniversary.''A beacon of inspiration for youth, the world fondly remembers his passion for science & teaching. His ideas will continue to ignite our minds for years to come,'' Mr Goyal said.
