Sanjay Roy, police volunteer, was convicted on Saturday of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.The verdict was delivered by Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge of Sealdah court, 57 days after the in-camera trial, which commenced on November 12.
Roy claimed in court that he was framed.The judge, however, said he would have an opportunity to speak on Monday before the sentence is pronounced.The Sealdah sessions court held the trial in-camera from November 12,2024, and concluded on January 9, 2025, with statements recorded from50 witnesses, including the victim’s parents, investigating officials,
forensic experts, and her colleagues at the RG Kar.
Civic Volunteer attached to the Kolkata Police Sanjay Roy is the only accused in the brutal rape and murder, which had rocked the country and beyond. He was arrested on the day by Kolkata Police, who handed over to the CBI after Calcutta High transferred the case to the federal agency on August 14, 2024.
