New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted permanent commission for women in Navy, saying both male and female officers should be treated equally after statutory bar was lifted by the Centre to allow entry of women officers in Navy.
"There cannot be gender discrimination in granting permanent commission to women officer in Navy after statutory bar was lifted by Centre," a bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud said.
The Top Court directed the Centre to implement its order within three months and grant permanent commission to serving women officer in Navy on availability of vacancies.
The Apex Court rejected the Centre's plea referring to physiological limitations of woman officers in granting permanent commission in the Navy.(UNI)
