SC issues notice to Centre, respondents on Polygamy, etc

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Union of India (UoI) and other respondents in connection with Polygamy, Nikah-Halala, Nikah-Mutah and Nikah-Misyar and referred the matter to a larger five-judge constitution bench after hearing four petitions in this regard.

The apex court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, also issued notice to the Ministry of Law and Justice and the Ministry of Women, Child and Development after hearing the four PILs.The four petitioners who had moved the apex court are Samina, Mohsin Nafisa and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashwini Upadhyay.(UNI)
