New Delhi: In a major security lapse, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked by a man during her daily Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her official residence Wednesday morning. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety protocols surrounding the head of the state.

The assailant, identified as a 35-year-old man from Gujarat's Rajkot posed as a complainant, and carried documents to gain access to the hearing. Later, on the pretext of handling over a petition, he allegedly slapped the CM and pulled her hair.

Security personnel present at the venue immediately intervened and subdued the attacker. The police have confirmed that the Chief Minister was safe and did not sustain any major injuries. Following the incident, security has been significantly tightened at the CM House.

The Delhi Police is now interrogating the attacker in custody. Investigators are meticulously examining his previous criminal records, if any, and his political affiliations to uncover a potential motive behind the targeted attack.

A probe into the matter has revealed that the attack was premeditated, sources said.

The political reaction was swift, with Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva strongly condemning the attack. He emphasized that such violence against a constitutional post is unacceptable, regardless of political differences.

The incident, which has sparked widespread condemnation across party lines, continues to unfold as authorities work to understand the full scope of the security lapse that allowed the individual to get close enough to physically assault the Chief Minister.

The Jan Sunwai, a forum for the common public to voice their grievances directly to the Chief Minister, has been temporarily suspended as authorities conduct a thorough security review.

MHA seeks detailed report of the attack on Delhi CM

Taking cognizance of the attack on Delhi CM, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed Delhi Police to prepare a detailed report of the security breach and submit it as soon as possible.

The directive confirmed by national BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari to UNI underscores the seriousness with which the Central government is treating the incident.
