Ahmedabad/Veraval: Several fishermen went missing on Thursday as more than a dozen boats capsized due to high wind speed and heavy rains off the coast of Gujarat's Gir Somnath district.
According to official information received by UNI, at least five boats, carrying eight fishermen, tied at Nava Bandar jetty capsized between 11 pm and 3 am due to strong winds and high tides in the Arabian Sea.
The police sources said, "They only have the data of boats that were near the jetty. Several fishing boats were already on the high sea.
"The number of missing boats is yet to be ascertained."
Gir Somnath district Superintendent of Police Rahul Tripathi told UNI that a joint team of police and Coast Guard is engaged in the search operation.
He also did not rule out the possibility of a further increase in the number of missing boats and fishermen.
Due to the western disturbance and the low pressure area, Gujarat is receiving unseasonal rains for the last 24 hours. (UNI)
