Severe heatwave likely over East & South Peninsular India for next 5 days: IMD

New Delhi: Parts of eastern India and the south peninsular region are expected to witness heat wave conditions that can be severe at several places for the next five days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

According to the IMD, heat wave to severe heat wave conditions is very likely to prevail in many places over Odisha, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal from today till May 2nd and reduce in intensity thereafter. Isolated pockets of Rayalseema will witness heat wave to severe heat wave conditions on 2nd and 3rd May.

“Heatwave conditions in isolated pockets over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Saurashtra, Kutch, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Konkan and Goa and Kerala will prevail for the next 5 days,” the IMD said.

The weather department has also predicted that heavy rainfall spell accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds will continue over Northeast India for the next 4-5 days.

“Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning and winds gusting up to 50 kmph is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till May 3,” the IMD said.

On hot and humid weather conditions, the IMD said, “These conditions are very likely to prevail over West Assam, Tripura, south Gujarat Region, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from 29th April to 1st May; Konkan & Goa during 30th April - 3rd May; over Kerala & Mahe during 30th April – 3rd May; over Coastal Karnataka during next 5 days.”
