Srinagar: Two militants were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation on Friday in south Kashmir district of Shopian, official sources said.Mobile internet has been snapped in the area to prevent spread of rumours.
Shopian and Pulwama are going to polls in the third and final phase of voting in Anantnag Parliamentary constituency on May 6. First two phases in the constituency in Anantnag and Kulgam were held last month.
Sources said troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Imamsahib Shopian following a tip off about the presence of militants in the wee hours.
When the security forces were moving towards a particular area, the militants hiding there opened fire, they said, adding that troops also retaliated, ensuing in an encounter. Two militants were killed and a soldier was wounded, they added.
There were reports that there were three militants, they said, adding that firing has stopped. The searches in the area continued when the reports last came in, the sources said. Additional security forces have been deployed in the nearby areas to prevent any demonstration. (UNI)
