Siachen hero Lance Naik Chandrashekhar's last rites performed after 38 years

Haldwani/Dehradun: The mortal remains of Lance Naik Chandrashekhar Herbola, who attained martyrdom during operation 'Meghdoot' in Siachen in 1984, reached his home on Wednesday.

Indian Army soldiers had on Saturday found Lance Naik Chandrashekhar's body in an old bunker at the Siachen glacier.

The mortal remains of the martyr were kept at his residence where his relatives, people of the neighbourhood and several others, including Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami offered their respect to the soldier.

Chief Minister Dhami payed tribute by laying a wreath on the body of the martyr.

Sainik Welfare Minister Ganesh Joshi and Women Empowerment Minister Rekha Arya payed floral tributes to the soldier. 

Dhami said that the sacrifice of martyr Chandra Shekhar ji will always be remembered.

He said that Sainik Dham is being established in the memory of the soldiers of Uttarakhand who made supreme sacrifices for the country. He said that the memories of martyr Chandrashekhar will also be preserved in Sainik Dham.

Sainik Welfare Minister Ganesh Joshi said that the government is standing shoulder to shoulder with the martyr's family.

The mortal remains of the martyr Chandrashekhar left for Chitrashila Ghat, Ranibagh, where the martyr was given a heartfelt farewell with full state honors and the tune of the army band.

The soldier was cremated at the Ghat. His daughters lit the pyre. (UNI)
