, Thursday, 29 July 2021 (17:33 IST)
New Delhi:The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Thursday sought a probe into the death of a district judge in Jharkhand who was hit by a speeding vehicle while out on a morning walk.
The incident took a new turn after chilling security footage showed a three-wheeler hitting the judge on a road.

The death of Dhanbad Additional District and Sessions judge Uttam Anand, who was hearing some high profile cases, was initially believed to be a hit-and-run incident.

The matter was taken up in the apex court today after the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) raised the incident first before justice DY Chandrachud, and then before the CJI.

Advocate Vikas Singh, the president of SCBA, mentioned the matter and said this is a “brazen attack” on the independence of the judiciary.

Singh, while saying that video of the incident was also shot, told the bench that if somebody is killed for not granting bail to a gangster, then there will be “no judiciary in the country”.

Chief Justice N V Ramana said that he had spoken with the Jharkhand Chief Justice in this regard.

"The High Court Chief Justice has taken up the issue and the case is now on at the High Court. We are aware of the case and we will take care," Justice Ramana said.

A Special Investigation Team has also been formed to probe the case. The accident took place a little over 0500 hrs on Wednesday.

Judge Anand was rushed to the city’s medical college by passers-by but doctors said he was dead by the time he was brought.

No one knew who he was.The judge was found in the hospital much later by the police following his family's missing complaint.(UNI)
