Supreme Court disposed of more cases than were filed during 2023

New Delhi: In an unprecedented development, the Supreme Court of India has disposed of more cases than were registered in 2023.
 
During the year, the top court disposed of a record 52191 cases, as against a total of 49191 cases registered.
 
Important matters like challenging abrogation of Section 370, Arbitration matters, Tussles between the Delhi Government and Centre, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly matter, Rights of LGBTQ, Heavy Motor Vehicles being driven on normal licenses, Arbitration matters relating to stamped documents and their admissibility among other important cases are among the 52191 cases disposed of from January 1 to December 15 this year.
 
The cases disposed of include 45642 miscellaneous matters and around 6549 regular matters. The records show that this year Supreme Court was able to dispose of more cases as compared to the cases registered.
 
The types of cases disposed of this year include - 17577 Special Leave Petitions (Civil),12795 Special Leave Petitions (Criminal), 5286 Civil Appeals, 3225 Criminal Appeasl and 1418 Writ Petitions (Civil)
 
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud asserted that the key factor causing delay in the disposing of matters was the procedural formalities. The use of innovative technology, digital platforms, and case management systems has helped reduce procedural delays and pendency.
 
Modern Case management systems like E-filing, Virtual hearing, and digital record keeping have helped efficiency and the record disposal of cases this year. Currently, the Supreme Court is closed for winter vacation till January 2, 2024. (UNI)
