Madurai (Tamil Nadu): The passengers of Chennai Central-Bodinayakanur Superfast Express had a providential escape, when one of the coaches derailed at Madurai junction on Thursday.

Railway sources said the incident took place when the train departed from platform number five at 0736 hours.

The first wheel of the seating-cum-luggage rake (SLR) coach next to the engine derailed prompting the loco pilots to stop the train.

On being alerted by the loco pilots of the train, senior Railway officials inspected the derailed coach and assessed the damage.

The Railway technical team re-railed the coach and removed it from the track. The train with the rest of the coaches departed from the railway junction at 0928 hours, after suffering a delay of nearly two hours.

There were no reports of any injuries to the passengers.

The train has fewer passengers in view of the Diwali festival.

The train connecting Chennai and Bodinayakanur is operated on Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week.
