New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Friday cleared a Bill that seeks to ban the controversial practice of 'Triple Talaq' among Muslims. The bill, which got the Cabinet approval at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is now expected to be introduced in the winter session of Parliament that began here on Friday, sources said.

The Supreme Court had in verdict given in August banned the practice of triple talaq in one go, declaring it is un-Islamic and unconstitutional. The apex court ruling, which was given by a panel of five judges from different major faiths – Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism, came on a bunch of petitions by Muslim women challenging the practice.

The government had last month said that it would bring in a law to give effect to the apex court judgement as the ill practice was still continuing despite the court ruling. It had said that triple talaq was violation of the fundamental rights of Muslims women.(UNI)
