Sivaganga: Three spectators were gored to death and around 150 others injured in Jallikattu (bull taming) events held at various places across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.Two spectators, identified as Ramanathan(38) and Kasi (25) were gored to death and more than 50 others injured, when unidentified bull-rearers unleashed unregistered bulls into the crowd during the “Manjuvirattu” (another form of Jallikattu) organized as part of the Pongal festival at Siravayal village in Sivaganga district. Sivaganga Superintendent of Police T.Jayachandran said action will be taken against the people responsible for let loosing the bulls into the spectators’ crowd, who have gathered at the open ground to see the Manjuvirattu event.
In another incident, a 25-year-old spectator, namely R.Solaiandi was killed, when a ferocious bull attacked him during the Jallikattu held at Avaarangadu village near Manapparai in Tiruchirapalli district. More than 40 people were injured in the event and all of them were treated at government hospital.In Madurai, 36 people were injured, six of them seriously in Jallikattu held at Alanganallur, known for hosting the World-renowned event. The six grievously injured people were admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital. As many as 697 registered tamers and 571 bulls brought from various districts have participated in the day-long event.
Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswamy and Deputy Chief Minister O.Panneerselvam jointly flagged off the event this morning. This is for the first time that a Chief Minister inaugurated the Jallikattu event in the state.A young tamer, namely Ajay was gifted with a car for taming 8 bulls in the event.Reports reaching here said several people were injured in Jallikattu events held at Rachandar Thirumalai village in Karur and Nathamadipatti village in Dindigul districts.(UNI)
