Agartala:At least three incidents of rape, including one gang rape and another gang rape and murder, rocked Tripura in the last 24 hours within a month of Chief Minister Biplab Deb's claim that crime against women fell "drastically" in the state under the current regime.
Police said one Mujib Ali of Srinathpur village of Kailashahar in Unokoti district was arrested with the charge of raping a minor girl. The accused had forged a relationship with the girl over phone about two months ago and both of them fell in love, he claimed.
Allegedly, on September 28 last Mujib took her away from her house to Hiracherra jungle and raped her several times over the night.
The accused made good his escape after the crime, leaving the girl alone. In the morning, she made her way back home with the help some local people.
The victim lodged an FIR against Mujib, who is married and has a daughter. Police arrested him last night.In another incident, a 52-year-old widow was gang rapped in her house in the wee hours of September 29.
Based on her complaint, police arrested Surajit Debbarma (23) and Arbin Debbarma (22) of Manik Bazar village of Teliamura in Khowai district.
Allegedly, the accused youths stormed her house early in the morning, when she was alone, and raped her.In the third incident, a 38-year-old housewife was found dead in her house at Khilpara village of Udaipur in Gomati district.
The victim's husband alleged that after returning from work on the night of September 29, he found her naked body with several injuries in an abandoned room.
Police recovered the body based on the complaint and the post mortem report confirmed gang rapped.
So far, police has not been able to arrest anybody in this connection. The police said that investigation is progressing well and hopefully the culprits would be arrested soon.
Meanwhile, test identification parade of all nine accused of gang rape of a middle-aged housewife on September 24 last was carried out yesterday here. Police is yet to confirm the outcome of the parade.(UNI)
