Kolkata: In a daylight shooting that sent shockwaves through Cooch Behar, Amar Roy (35), son of Trinamul Congress leader and Dauaguri Gram Panchayat pradhan Kuntala Roy, was gunned down at Dadeya under Cooch Behar-II block on Saturday.
Police said the incident took place when Roy and his friend Alamgir arrived at the weekly Dadeya market in a four-wheeler.
According to sources, a heated argument broke out with a group of miscreants. The attackers, reportedly wearing helmets, surrounded the vehicle, blocked its movement, and fired multiple
rounds before fleeing. Panic spread across the market as shopkeepers hurriedly pulled down shutters.
Roy, who sustained a bullet injury to the head, was rushed to Cooch Behar Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead. Alamgir was shifted to a private hospital for advanced treatment.
A large police contingent was deployed at the market and the hospital, though no arrests have been made so far. An investigation is underway.
District TMC president Abhijit Dey Bhowmik and North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guho visited the hospital. While Guho declined to comment without more information, Dey Bhowmik suggested that a “political vendetta” could be behind the killing.
The district, long regarded as a political flashpoint, has seen a spate of violent incidents in recent weeks. Earlier, Panchayat Karmadaksha Raju Dey was attacked, leading to the arrest of a BJP MLA’s son.
Two days ago, several houses in Nazirhat, Dinhata, were allegedly vandalised by TMC activists, with women — including a pregnant woman — reportedly assaulted. On August 5, BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari’s convoy was attacked and his car damaged during a visit to protest assaults on BJP MLAs.
