Kolkata: The Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress on Saturday named former Prasar Bharati CEO Jawahar Sarkar to the Rajya Sabha election, scheduled to be held on August 9.
" We are delighted to nominate Mr Jawahar Sircar in the Upper House of Parliament,"an All India Trinamool Congress official twitter account said.
" Mr Sircar spent nearly 42 years in public service and was also the former CEO of
Prasar Bharati. His invaluable contribution to public service shall help us serve our country better", the AITC twitter said.
The seat fell vacant after Dinesh Trivedi quit the seat as well as resigned from the ruling party to join the BJP in February last.The last date of filing the nomination papers is July 29 and polling if necessary onAugust 9.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also AITC chairperson, will now also be the chairperson of the Trinamool Congress parliamentary party, the TMC announced on Friday.(UNI)
