TMC observing 'Black Day' to protest 'heckling' of leaders
, Saturday, 4 August 2018 (15:46 IST)
Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is observing 'Black Day' on Saturday and Sunday by wearing black badges in every block across the state to protest  the 'heckling and illegal' detention of its party leaders in Silchar.
Party secretary general and State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said the party is observing "black day" in every block and district of the state on Saturday and Sunday.
" Observing 'Black Day' in every block is in protest against against the heckling of our party leaders in Silchar. Our slogan will be - We don't need this monstrous government anymore, '' Mr  Chatterjee said.

The TMC secretary general said, " We condemn the way the public representatives were manhandled and detained by the Assam police at the Silchar airport. They being MPs had every right to visit a place, but all rules were violated and our party delegation was stopped. This is shameful, " he said.

Earlier, an eight-member TMC delegation comprising a WB Cabinet minister, six MPs and one MLA flew to Silchar on Thursday for an on-ground assessment of  the situation in Assam post-NRC final draft publication on July 30.

However, they were prevented from leaving the airport as prohibitory orders were in place in Silchar and sent back on Friday after being kept in preventive detention at the airport overnight.

The final draft of the updated National Register of Citizens for Assam was published on July 30, where names of 40 lakh applicants were excluded, who will be given opportunity to file claims and objections. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came down heavily on the incident, stating that the country is experiencing a state of "super emergency".

Ms Banerjee reiterated that her fight for justice for the people will continue, even if lakhs of FIRs are lodged against her and her party colleagues."Our fight will continue for the sake of common people. We will never step back,"  she averred.(UNI)
