TRAI throws the rule book before Apple

The ongoing tussle between TRAI and Apple has further intensified. The Telecom regulator body’s new regulations have boldly cleared that if the tech-giant doesn’t adhere to DND support, this would be the end of iPhones smartphones in the country.

These regulations have been laid out to curb the menace of pesky promotional calls which have angered the users for a long time. TRAI has directed the telecoms to ensure that devices registered on their networks should support the installation of DND 2.0 app within six months. After this period all the non-supporting devices should be derecognized.

Unlike android which sportingly permits apps to access call logs and messages, Apple is obdurate on safeguarding users’ data.  Without access to call logs and messages third party DND apps are not feasible on IOS. Hence as of now, Apple cannot comply with the new rules led down by TRAI.

But in its full impulse, TRAI is set to end the days of pesky telemarketing calls. If Apple doesn’t come up with a solution, TRAI would be forced to ban the use of iPhones in the country.

With nearly 10 million users in India and 44% market share in the high-end category phones, this is something Tim Cook and Co cannot afford.
