A shocking incident has emerged from Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, where a woman died after the owner of an illegal clinic and his nephew allegedly performed a surgery on her by following a YouTube tutorial.
The incident occurred in the Kothi police station area, where the duo had been operating a clinic without any valid medical licence.
According to police, Munishra Rawat, wife of Tehbahadur Rawat, was suffering from a stone-related medical issue. On December 5, her husband took her to Shri Damodar Aushdhalaya in Kothi, where clinic operator Gyan Prakash Mishra allegedly claimed her abdominal pain was due to stones and recommended an operation costing Rs 25,000. The family deposited Rs 20,000 before the so-called procedure began.
In his complaint, Tehbahadur alleged that Mishra — described by police as a quack — was intoxicated during the surgery and started the operation after watching a YouTube video. He claimed Mishra made a deep incision that severed multiple veins, resulting in the woman’s death the following evening on December 6. Mishra’s nephew assisted him throughout the procedure.
Kothi SHO Amit Singh Bhadoriya said that a case has been registered against Mishra and his nephew for causing death by negligence, along with charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Both accused are currently absconding, and efforts are underway to arrest them.
Police said the nephew, Vivek Kumar Mishra, works at an Ayurvedic hospital in Raebareli, and the illegal clinic had allegedly been operating for years under the cover of his government job. On Tuesday, the clinic was sealed by Kothi CHC superintendent Sanjeev Kumar.
